Own Your Healing Journey: Take Control and Thrive

Last week, in my cancer support space, we discussed the common challenge faced by patients of being rushed into a treatment decision. The diagnosis process is often rushed, treatment protocols are hurriedly implemented, and doctors frequently rush in and out without truly listening to questions or providing satisfactory answers.

The immediate rush into treatment, without allowing patients to be adequately prepared or make informed decisions, leaves them feeling powerless, overwhelmed, and helpless. In many cases, fear becomes the driving force behind their treatment decisions.

However, decisions made from a place of fear, triggered by the fight-or-flight response, actually hinder the body's natural healing capacity. Studies found on PubMed have shown that the feeling of helplessness decreases survival rates. On the other hand, patient empowerment programs or self-development initiatives prevent psychological distress.

Moreover, rushed decisions can increase the likelihood of false diagnoses. I speak from personal experience when I say that two years after my initial breast cancer diagnosis, an MRI revealed a tiny 5-millimeter lump. The biopsy needle failed to accurately diagnose the lump, resulting in unnecessary surgery. Fortunately, advancements in precision technology have made surgeries more patient-friendly and outpatient-based, but in my case, the surgery turned out to be unnecessary.

A sense of urgency from our medical experts may feel like getting more attention that we may reasonably and justifiably crave under treatment, but taking a mindful pause to gather our inner sense of stability and power to make our own decision can substantially reduce our feeling of helplessness and dependence. So, what can we do to prevent feelings of further helplessness and regain control?

Here are eight tips to consider, empowering you to take control of your healing process:

  1. Pause. Slow down. Relax your nervous system. Clear solutions can only come from a calm mind. Taking a few days or weeks to empower yourself in the diagnosis phase of your journey will not worsen your prognosis; in fact, it may help you feel more in control and initiate the mind-body connection necessary for internal healing. Explore from the abundance of relaxation techniques which work best for you.

  1. Recognize that the healthcare system, like any system, has its limitations. Doctors, despite their best intentions, have limited time per patient. They excel in disease-treating medical protocols, but they may not fully understand the bio-individualities of your personal life. Prepare a list of questions for each visit and insist on explanations regarding how the treatment intends to heal you and why. If you feel your questions are not being adequately addressed, do not hesitate to seek another doctor who will prioritize your concerns.

  1. Embrace an integrative approach by tapping into different systems that can serve you. Compile a list of experts from various fields, such as advanced clinical research centres, integrative clinics, anthroposophical clinics, traditional healing centres, naturopaths, medical advocates of the metabolic approach to cancer, epigenetic advocates, nutritionists, energy healers. Healing starts from within, and an integrative approach offers you more options and choices to consider.

  1. Seek out inspiring survival stories of individuals who have transformed their lives through lifestyle changes. Books like "Radical Remission" and "Radical Hope" by Dr. Kelly Turner feature numerous long-term survivors who defied dire cancer prognoses and overcame other chronic diseases. Unfortunately, mainstream sources like search engines and films often lack the hope and courage needed to inspire us. Actively search for examples of healing to witness what is possible and to foster a sense of hope within yourself.

  1. When seeking information backed by scientific studies, turn to PUBMED, the largest platform for medical research studies. You can find a wealth of studies specific to your situation, lifestyle factors, and survival rate-supporting factors.

  1. Keep a journal to track your medical progress within the conventional treatment space. Document everything that happens to you and your body, ensuring that you have a comprehensive record.

  1. Additionally, maintain a separate journal dedicated to your health vision and healing journey. Envision your ideal state of health and wellness. Identify the areas of your life that are not currently serving your health and explore ways to make positive changes. Devote sections of your journal to your physical, mental/emotional, and spiritual health, noting aspects that require improvement. By becoming aware of the areas, you wish to change, you can creatively find ways to implement those changes and identify the support you need.

  1. While unsolicited advice from well-meaning individuals may seem loving and helpful, taking personal control over your health process requires finding your own solutions. This self-discovery will enhance your confidence and, subsequently, your immune system. Remember, healing is an inside-out process. Look within, trust your intuition, and establish boundaries that keep you grounded and focused on your unique path. The greatest gift someone can give you in your healing journey is an uplifting, wholehearted trust and support in your healing process, allowing you to express your needs, whether it's help with household chores, cooking, or simply offering a comforting presence.

Taking control of our healing process is a transformative and uplifting lifestyle factor. Explore all available systems and be curious about what will empower you and enhance your sense of control.
